Melbourne Portrait Day turned Sketchwalk.

I was trying to coordinate an OIC Portrait Day in Melbourne yesterday so we could have it both in Singapore and Melbourne at the same time, but weather circumstances conspired against us. (sorry, no photos because i forgot to bring the camera :X)

No one sat outside because it was so cold, and we weren't allowed to do it inside because we'd be "disturbing the patrons", so we took portrait day to Carlton Gardens. And... again, because it was so frosty, no one stopped to pose for us except this lady. :D

But she was the only one. :X By then we were freezing our fingers off and decided to head to an indoors cafe to sketch people instead (trying to keep to the portrait day theme)

A friend showed his portrait to the gentleman he was drawing, and he treated us to beer and coffee in exchange for the drawing. :D

After that, a bit of sketchwalking in the city and stopped because it was too cold to continue. I headed back towards my place to do some more drawing and was joined by this Korean girl, who watched me draw this shop. She mentioned she used to draw as well, so I passed some of my cardboards to her and we both drew until it started drizzling.

and that was the failed attempt at Portrait Day in Melbourne. :P

PS: the cardboard was from the remnants of a box i used to make a sign for portrait day. was gonna post that up as well, but it has "gone with the wind".

Busking @ St Kilda on a rainy day.

Froze me fingers off today @ St Kilda Beach drawing portraits on the streets. :P Luckily nobody came to chase me away. Payment was voluntary, and up to the individual.

These girls paid in hugs + kisses + candy.

Wire Drawings

Some wire "drawings" I've been translating from my live drawing classes, an interplay between 2D/3D space and an attempt to make my drawings a tangible object.

Soon Lee Voucher

A very fun job I did with Soon Lee (a local boutique located at Haji Lane 56) for their in-store voucher. Almost total creative freedom to conceptualize and draw. :D

Figure Drawing

During lessons (each 3 hrs with about 45mins for break) we typically vary between 3-5min, 20 min, 1hr, 3hr, 6 hr (same pose for 2 weeks).

These are some of the quick gestural drawings with 3-5 minute poses. Usually size of drawing is between A3-A2, or A2-A1.

Large Drawing

One of the projects from school, where we're supposed to have a large piece of artwork in the end. I went around the city sketching in my sketchbook, before redrawing/enlarging and linking the original sketches to form the large drawing.

the words of Mr. Wood

Ashley Wood that is.

"Cut away the bullshit, the swindle, the galleries, the cooler-than-shit historic myths of street/gallery/animation/low/high/brut/comic art background and you're left with the image. Does the image work without a clapperhand explaining why it rocks? No? Then fuck off, write a novel, and leave art to someone else. Intellectualize and die."

*drops to ground and kowtows in hero worship*

that is a completely tattoo worthy quote, is it not?

INTELLECTUALIZE AND DIE.

OIC Scavenger Sketch!

Topic this time, draw your favourite superhero from your childhood. muahahhahaa.

i <3 the TICK!

Recent Stuff :D

have been drawing quite a bit recently, outside of what is required in school. :X been slacking for a while.

first two are drawn from reference, Weegee's New York. i super super love weegee's photos.

^nib and ink

^graphite on paper, although the paper abit too rough for the texture that i was going for, used a tortillion to do the smoothing of shades. tortillions are cool.

hardest bits to do is the shading on the legs, to show the knee and the calf muscles :/ so it's good to reference from photo because when do in life drawing classes, i'm usually too busy with getting the shape of the body correct to be bothered about the correct muscular definition. :X

lecturer says is good to copy from old masters' drawings because then you get a pretty good idea of the muscles of body and the underlying structure of skeleton/how different muscles strain and stretch in different poses, etc. got to do that for class, so will report more on that soon.

^nib and ink drawing of an acquaintance. i find that the nibs with round ends suit me better than the ones without the round tips. they're much more suited to do bold, fast lines, so work well for quick drawings/sketches, but too clumsy for delicate line work.

will try to borrow a camera to take photos of larger drawings in my studio. :D

haven't done much with colours yet though. i kinda want to learn how to draw correctly first, before i start using colour, but maybe doing both together is better. opinions?
